Out of Control

I pride myself as a discipline and patience runner, but lately I was frustrated of not being able to finish my long run strong.

This week, a blogger friend, Paul of 50 is the new 30 blog, suggested to experiment the walk - running to extend my range. With this in mind, I came out with a plan --- for every 5 miles, walk 2 minutes. Today, I put my plan in motion knowing that I just ran 17 miles last Monday. At the Long Beach Marathon official route, I did a long run of 20 miles with a time of 3:25:07

and still with enough juice to run and walk the last 6 miles.

This Week Mileage:
9-13 ........................... 6
9/14 ........................... 17
9/15 ........................... 3
9/16 ........................... 7
9/17 ........................... 3
9/18 ........................... 0
9/19 ........................... 20

Total .......................... 56 miles/90km

For 68 years old newbie, it's stupid moved. Thanks god, except for sore knees, I feel good.
Starting tomorrow, I will start my 4 week taper ...... confident that I can finish my first marathon within regulation.

  2. For longer runs (30k and up), I resort to the Galloway run-walk method. It has actually resulted in better finish times for me, and I do not end up a total wreck after the race. Maybe it's a strategy you should consider, sir. It won't give you a podium finish, but it will minimize the risk of injury, allow you to enjoy the run, and leave you with more than enough juice to enjoy any post-race celebration. Take care, sir!

  4. Thanks for the tips, Julius! The run-walk method will be part of my plans. Prospect of a cold beer after the run(free beer by Miller) is looking good. Good luck and take care at your Camsur run.

  5. Wow! 56 miles for the week?!?

51-52 is my max ever. I need at least two rest days per week, I find. Kudos to you!

I'm glad the 20 miles went well...a good confidence booster, no? I think your set at breaking 5 hours no problemo. Even with a fade in the last 6.2 (which is pretty hard to avoid) you should be able to do it.

But whatever time you post, enjoy yourself..it's your first and you'll not forget it!
